SUMMER MORNING

The cocks have now the morn foretold,
     The sun again begins to peep,
The shepherd, whistling to his fold,
     Unpens and frees the captive sheep.
O’er pathless plains at early hours
     The sleepy rustic sloomy goes;
The dews, brushed off from grass and flowers,
     Bemoistening sop his hardened shoes

While every leaf that forms a shade,
     And every floweret’s silken top,
And every shivering bent and blade,
     Stoops, bowing with a diamond drop.
But soon shall fly those diamond drops,
     The red round sun advances higher,
And, stretching o’er the mountain tops,
     Is gilding sweet the village-spire.

’Tis sweet to meet the morning breeze,
     Or list the gurgling of the brook;
Or, stretched beneath the shade of trees,
     Peruse and pause on Nature’s book,
When Nature every sweet prepares
     To entertain our wished delay,—
The images which morning wears,
     The wakening charms of early day!

Now let me tread the meadow paths
     While glittering dew the ground illumes,
As, sprinkled o’er the withering swaths,
     Their moisture shrinks in sweet perfumes;
And hear the beetle sound his horn;
     And hear the skylark whistling nigh,
Sprung from his bed of tufted corn,
     A haling minstrel from the sky.

John Clare    (1793 - 1864)

BRIGHT EYES.

Bright eyes! ye fatal ones,
    Turn ye away;
Have ye not slain enow
    Before to-day?
He of the pallid brow,
    So much admired;
He with the gowden hair,
    Saw and expir'd!
He of the gentle mien;
    One free and bold;
Twain in their downy youth,
    Twain grey and old:
Still you another would
    Take for your prize;
Turn away, lady, those
    Fatal bright eyes!
Sweet lips! ye tempting ones,
    What would you say?
Have ye not spoken guile
    Oft ere to-day?
Have ye not whisper'd love,
    Meaning bright gold?
Suffer'd delusive hope,
    Heart being cold?
Set forth your winning smiles
    But to allure;
Wounded, and left the wound
    Never to cure?
Still you another do
    Seek to decoy;
Take, then, your victim,—
    I'll Kiss you and die!

SUMMER SOLSTICE 20th June 2008

As the sun spirals its longest dance,
Cleanse us.
As nature shows bounty and fertility,
Bless us.
Let all things live with loving intent

And to fulfill their truest destiny

Well that was the weekend, that was!

The trip up the M1 turnpike was uneventful except to remember that a road widening scheme has started  north of Nottingham and will not be complete until 2010!
Alex is now walking,not as fast as his Dad - yet!! Had a nice day with Marie then to the 12th Century Treasurers House, built almost in the centre of the Roman Fort. Nic, Dr like, has moved back in time from the Viking Jorvik Centre to the Treasurers House - which is home to a legion of roman soldiers! So people say! Part of the House stands over a Roman road, the Via Decumana but I won't spoil the story - a visit is recommended.
Just to say by nineteenth century it was described as ‘a bug ridden slum.' The House was rescued by wealthy industrialist Frank Green, who purchased it in 1897. One of the most significant collectors and antiquarians of his day. He rebuilt Treasurer’s House as a series of rooms to display his collection in different historical periods. He donated to the national trust in 1937.

Green's of Wakefield, was famous for manufacturing the 'Economiser', patented in 1845 by Edward Green. It was a device fitted to an industrial boiler which saves energy by using the exhaust gases from the boiler to pre-heat the cold water used to fill it. Thus saving hundreds of tonnes of coal a week on a modern power station.

The house is easy to find - next door to the Minster. The butler's tea was enjoyable - a large pot of tea with Parkin, cheese and slices of apple.

Nic and Marie had cooked on Friday and Saturday respectively I just ate and drank!  Sunday of course was Father's Day on which I rested and Nic was again working. walked around with Marie and Alex doing my touristy thing.Sunday evening we had dinner at a nearby Hotel and all of us chilled out. We had drinks whilst ordering and ate in the "Piano Room" just as well the pianist was nt there as our table was next to the instrument! Monday, while Marie worked Nic and I went around the railway museum. I had visited there on a school trip,by train from Manchester, in the last century.

Monday evening we all went to the local pub, where we ate in the 'Indian Gateway' which made a change from my usual chinese takeaways at home!  I had a mild coconut based chicken curry with pilau rice.

Too soon it was Tuesday morning and time to drive back home, Alex cried when I was leaving which made me a little sad, but I shall be back up there in November when it is Maries birthday and Nic's graduation ceremony.

Oh yes - the birds are still in the pyracantha !

Squatters Rights

I have to report that the castle has two black 'squatters.' They are taking over my daily routine and imposing an afternoon curfew on my gardening activities, where they have almost completed building their home. If I walk within a couple of feet of them, as I have to when emptying my refuse into the wheelie bin, they are silent but as I walk back to the kitchen they assault my ears with a cachophony of foul noise. Having spent a night curled up against her partner, the female has no hesitation in using the bath. He appears to enjoy beans, particularly just as they sprout through the soil. I have attempted to get photographic evidence of their activities but so far with no success.  Having read DAPHNE du MAURIER's  "The Birds", their occupation of the pyracantha is a little scary! I just hope that the local moggies keep their distance whilst I am away in Jorvik. To those that are: Happy Father's Day this coming Sunday.

POND LIFE

A frog is reading a book of fairy tales
As flies bounce on the surface of a pond.

The frog is not assuming a human position
Like slouched against a sycamore
As he would in animated form.

He’s a real frog, perched on a rock
Moist skin shimmering in sunlight
His yellow eyes study the pages.

A leg is dipped briefly into the water to prevent overheating
With great difficulty he turns each page
Using his nose and webbed hands.

After he reads the final tale, he slips into the water
And considers what he’s read
Stories pass through his mind
As the sun scorches away a cloud.

That night, in a sea of tadpoles
He dreams of a princess to kiss.

Enough is enough

On 14th May 2008, Israel celebrated the 60th anniversary of its ‘declaration of independence’. Over the last month Radio and Television have covered this event, worldwide. What was presented to the world was that it was a commemoration of the legitimate and legal creation of a safe haven for Jews escaping from Europe. What you were not told about, is what actually happened in 1948 - a series of massacres, bombing of civilians, kidnaps and other terrorist atrocities that culminated in the ethnic cleansing of the land of over 750,000 Arab Palestinians and the destruction over 400 of their villages.

The United Nations had proposed a partition plan giving 55% of ancient Palestine for a Jewish state but the Zionists - who had targeted the whole of Palestine for the creation of a Jewish State long before the Nazi atrocities - took 78% of the land by terrorist tactics and military force. The civilized world regards these acts as war crimes but Zionists, then and now, see them as the wholly necessary and justified means for the creation of their Jewish State.

Those 750,000 refugees and their descendants - over seven million of them - still live today, dispossessed and destitute, in refugee camps throughout the region. Israel is in illegal occupation of Palestinian lands and is in violation of numerous UN resolutions. It is the longest and most brutal military occupation in history. International law continues to be persistently and grossly breached and fundamental human rights are infringed with impunity, especially in the Gaza strip. No other country [apart from Iraq] has flouted the United Nations' authority so brazenly in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction.  Israel’s own deeply racist society treats its Palestinian citizens with institutionalised discrimination. It is time the rest of the world said, enough is enough.

Brigitte in trouble

A French court has fined former film star Brigitte Bardot 15,000 euros (£12,000, or $6000) for inciting racial hatred.

She was prosecuted over a letter published on her website that complained Muslims were "destroying our country by imposing their ways".

maybe she was thinking of this when she spoke :
