Another tale of two citiesGrim videos showing violent and sexually explicit content are introducing the "dark side" of the internet to children, warns a committee of Britains MPs, who say more needs to be done to block clips showing inappropriate material by online companies. It cited research suggesting that 16% of eight-to 15-year-olds in the UK have come across “nasty, worrying or frightening” content online, and said there was “consistent” evidence that up to 20% of children have suffered cyber-bullying. The Committee also said there was a “lax approach” by some sites to removing illegal material and that it was “shocking” that the industry standard for removing material was 24 hours. The MPs also recommend software filtering to automatically identify inappropriate material and the adoption of an age-classification scheme for online games.
Apparently the"Great Firewall of China" blocks information the government views as improper, unhealthy or a threat to its internal law and order. Sites that contain obscenity, pornography, and criminal activity are banned. Severe restrictions are in force against sites that cover "taboo topics" such as police brutality, freedom of speech, and Marxist sites. [I find the last one amazing if true!]. It would appear that the BBC world news is well received on the other side of the bamboo curtain which is I suppose gratifying. Beijing Olympic Organising Committee spokesman Sun Weide told journalists: “We will be providing full access to the internet so that your reporting during the Olympic Games will not be affected in any way.” Some internet sites have been blocked by Chinese authorities, but these were unrelated to the Olympics. Our preoccupation is to ensure that the international media can report on the Olympic Games. And anything beyond that is a matter for the Chinese authorities.” If no form of censorship existed anywhere in the world then I would be critical of those who practised it. As I see it the reporters who are in China are there specifically to report on the Olympic games. They do protest to much about censorship – are they angry because access to their daily ‘fix’ of porn has been removed from china.com?

Safety First!China has set up designated areas in three Beijing parks for demonstrations during the Olympics. The idea to have "protest pens" is in line with practice at past Games as the International Olympic Committee charter prohibits demonstrations or "political, religious or racial propaganda" at Olympic venues or sites. "We have dedicated places for demonstrations at several parks," said Liu Shaowu, director of the security department at Beijing's Olympics organising committee."Chinese law protects the legal right of people to hold lawful demonstrations and marches." Ranks of Chinese paramilitary police swore to prevent terrorist attacks or "political incidents" disrupting the Beijing Olympics in a show of force at the Games' main stadium. The troops were told they must "resolutely prevent major incidents of violence and terrorism, resolutely prevent major political incidents affecting state security and social stability, and resolutely prevent large-scale mass incidents."[ A euphemism for riots, demonstrations and protests]. The People's Armed Police is a key force China has deployed to maintain control during the next month's Games, were reminded that the country's Communist Party leaders regard security threats as a paramount concern. Commander Yu Linxiang told 100,000 troops to "fight well in the offensive battle for Olympic security", I think I will stay home and wait for the start of the Premiership! SPITTING FEATHERS
If I as to write what I really think about some of this week's headlines the politically correct fraternity would be on me like a tonne of bricks. . . . would be guilty of all sorts of ' isms so here is a joke :
A man boarded a plane with 6 children. As they got settled in there seat a woman sitting across the aisle from him leaned over to him and asked, 'Are all of those kids yours?'
He replied,” No. I work for a condom company. These are customer complaints.'
A SUMMER DAY.
James Duxbury 1854 - ???? Emmeline Pankhurst, 1858-1928Emmeline Goulden was born on 14 July 1858 in Manchester into a family with a tradition of radical politics. In 1879 she married Richard Pankhurst, a lawyer and supporter of the women's suffrage movement. He was the author of the Married Women's Property Acts of 1870 and 1882, which allowed women to keep earnings or property acquired before and after marriage. His death in 1898 was a great shock to Emmeline.
In 1889 Emmeline founded the Women's Franchise League, which fought to allow married women to vote in local elections. Regarded by many as a dangerous subversive, Emmeline Pankhurst was the charismatic leader of the Women's Social and Political Union - an organisation that gained much notoriety for its militant activities and whose members were the first to be christened 'suffragettes'. British politicians, press and public were astonished by the demonstrations, window smashing, arson and hunger strikes of the suffragettes. In 1913, WSPU member Emily Davison was killed when she threw herself under the King's horse at the Derby as a protest at the government's continued failure to grant women the right to vote. Like many suffragettes Emmeline was arrested on numerous occasions. She was imprisoned 13 times between 1908 and 1914, and used hunger, thirst and sleep strikes to endanger her health so that she would be released. In 1918 the Representation of the People Act gave voting rights to women over 30. She died while campaigning in June 1928, less than a month before a bill giving women equal voting rights with men became law. 14.07.1793Exactly 215 years ago today the French were revolting.
July 14th - the partying continues all day and later thousands of people come together again at the Champ-de-Mars to watch the fireworks at the Trocadéro. On top of all that, most bars and clubs stage their own celebrations, so take your pick. If you're not in Paris, don't worry: every single village in France has their own dance, with champagne, fireworks, street fun and lots more. Everyone should take in at least one Bastille Day in their lives.
Although nothing now remains of the Bastille fortress itself, the place where it once stood remains an enduring symbol of the ideals of liberté, egalité and fraternité. SINGLE MOTHER STRUGGLES ON
I noticed the increased activity in and around the Pyracantha on Tuesday - both male and female spent from dawn to dusk flying 'goodies' into the nest. Wednesday I saw two had leapt the nest and were exploring the garden. That was when the female had a spat with a magpie. If she had have buttoned her beak all may have been well. Instead,in the highest decibels she could muster, she announced to the surrounding area that she had a secret. Now cats are lazy creatures and when on thursday morning two entered the next door garden she was at it again. The cats, as ever, were curious , so jumped onto a handy garden shed to see what all the fuss was about. This increased the noise level from 'Mum'so I did my bit for conservation with a well aimed jug of water! It was 10 minutes later, when the male blackbird flew off to forage for food, that she stopped her warning cries. Feeding continued the rest of an uneventful day. Yesterday and this morning their is no sign of the male or two of the three fledglings, she is still feeding the youngest bird who is in the Vibernun near the kitchen window.Has he taken them on a worming trip ?? Will he return ?? Will she manage on her own ??

WHO IS THERE ?
Oh human Can’t you see! I am precisely like you I don’t like being humiliated I am no one’s doormat I’m person in my own right
When I was born I was born innocent Happy and free And I want to live A normal life With dignity Wouldn’t you? I realise there is a dawn Waiting to be born And that… after hardship… passes away Ease will come to life… very soon But… they’ve inflicted so much Pain and cruelty Upon this little girl And upon her homeland
The world is watching Eyes open wide In bewilderment And disbelief “What we are watching Is a fiction movie It’s not really true”
While in exile Puzzled… I agonize Wiping tears off my saddened face Searching around Any one there?
Looking up… into sky Did You hear my cries? Did You witness the crime?
Suddenly Knock… knock A gentle tap Yes, coming
Who is there? Hope is here Smiling at my heart Standing by my door

A HOP OR NOT ?
We have a local saying," What Manchester thinks today the rest of the country does tomorrow." From the abolition of slavery, Chartist Movement, Suffragettes, Computing, Splitting the Atom. . . .the list goes on and on. Whilst familiar with Avro's Vulcan aircraft, this story is one I was unfamiliar with. On Monday 13 July 2009, it will be exactly 100 years since the Salfordian aviator Alliot Verdon Roe became the first Briton to take flight - so why is the centennial anniversary of Roe’s first flight being celebrated by some this year? It’s all down to what you believe happened in 1908 – and that is something that splits aviation experts down the middle, as a year before Roe flew into the history books on board his triplane, some argue that he made his debut flight in a simpler biplane. What isn’t up for debate is that Alliot designed and built his Roe I Biplane in 1908 in an attempt to win a prize being offered by the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club (based at Brooklands racing track in Weybridge, Surrey).Roe had won a £75 prize offered by the Daily Mail for his design of a triplane the previous year, but the Brooklands stake was somewhat larger - the club committee were offering £2,500 for the first person to fly a circuit of their race track by the end of 1907. Although he missed the deadline to win the prize, Roe was so far on with his design by the turn of the year that he decided to complete it and make an attempt anyway. On 8 June 1908, Roe strapped himself into the biplane, started up the motor - a French Antoinette engine which had replaced his original British one, as that had proved not to be able to generate enough power - and made the first of a series of short hops around the track. Quite how successful those hops were is where the debate lies – did the aircraft truly leave the ground or not? While it has been widely accepted for many years that it did, recently in his book ‘Trials, Troubles and Triplanes’, Philip Jarrett argued that it didn’t, based on a letter written by Roe a month after his attempt in which he writes that the biplane ‘nearly left the ground’. It seems like conclusive evidence, but it’s not as black and white as it seems. Other aviation experts and Roe’s own descendants point out that he doesn’t actually say in the letter which version of the plane he is referring to – the one with the original small British engine or the one with the more powerful French replacement – and that he did, in fact, briefly take to the air. Had Roe continued to try in his biplane, the debate may have been halted there and then, as he probably would have succeeded eventually, but before anything further could be achieved, the biplane was damaged beyond repair when Brooklands attendants dropped it while they were lifting it over a fence. This led Roe back to his original award-winning design for the triplane and on 5 June 1909, he took his finished aircraft to Walthamstow marshes and began making initially unsuccessful attempts. His luck changed a month later - on 13 July, he became the first Briton to make a powered flight in an all British built aircraft. As no-one else had managed to make a flight in the interim period between Roe’s attempts, it means that whatever happened in 1908 was immaterial – A.V. Roe was and is indisputably the first Briton to successfully pilot an aircraft and more than deserving of a whole year of anniversary celebrations.

Hope springs eternal.
As I see it the problem is that man loves religion, it caters to his well being it bolsters the ego and develops mans self esteem. Religion is man trying to reach to God by his own deeds. All religions are the invention of man attempting to turn their creator into their own image. Christianity would like you to believe its message but on reflection this is a codified list taken from other Middle Eastern philosophy's. It preaches peace yet makes war for men's hearts or for the riches their lands possess. Other religions are no different. There can be no justification for religious bigotry whether we call them Inquisions or Jihad. Religion does not promote spirituality but hinders it. Religion is man climbing up the ladder of his own self-righteousness. Religion is what man does to obtain a seat at the top table. Religion is man-made. Man loves his religious ideas whilst ignoring the Spiritual world around him. No ancient sage will appear in a burning bush to warn mankind of the dangers of global warming and write the solution on a tablet of stone. Mother nature is screaming out in pain while the religious and political leaders attempt to create a failsafe solution for there own survival. If at today's G8 summit in Japan, each nation cut its defence budgets by 20%, the rest of humanity might just survive.
